Greatest length, N.E. and S.W., 85 miles; greatest breadth, S.E. and N.W., 41 miles; comprising an area of 1,865 square miles, or 1,193,443 acres, of which 393,191 are arable, 769,587 uncultivated, 7,079 in plantations, 479 in towns, and 23,107 under water.
The coast is indented by numerous bays, of which the principal are, Lough Swilly, Lough Foyle, Mulroy, Sheephaven, Teelin, Killybegs, Inver, and Donegal.
The islands are numerous; 17 are inhabited; the principal are, Innistrahul, North Arran, and Tory.
On Innistrahul there is a Lighthouse, showing a light revolving every two minutes; there are other Lighthouses, showing fixed lights, on Tory Island, at Fannet Point, W. of Lough Swilly, Rathlin, O'Beirne's Island, N. W. side of the entrance to the Bay of Donegal, and at St. John's Point, Killybegs.
The surface is mountainous and boggy.
The lakes are numerous, but small; the most remarkable is Lough Derg, 3,214 acres, having in it St. Patrick's Purgatory, a celebrated place of pilgrimage.
Rivers are numerous, but small.
The subsoil is chiefly granite, mica-slate, and limestone.
The climate is moist; potatoes, oats, and flax, are the chief crops; spade husbandry is practised along the west coast.
The population in 1841 was 296,448; 290,022 in the rural, and 6,426 in the civic district; and in 1861 the total population of the county was 236,859, being a decrease of 59,589.
The occupations are chiefly agricultural; the linen manufacture is now reviving, and weaving is extensively carried on, especially in the town and neighbourhood of Raphoe; that of woollen stockings is increasing, and much employment is afforded to the otherwise unemployed female population by the worked-muslin trade; the inhabitants near the coast are much occupied in the fisheries, and in the making of kelp from sea-weed, an article which is largely exported to Glasgow.
The county is divided into 6 baronies—Bannagh, Boylagh, Inishowen East and West, Kilmacrenan, Raphoe North and South, and Tyrhugh. It contains Raphoe diocese, and parts of those of Derry and Clogher, consisting of 51 parishes.
The principal towns are, Ballyshannon, population in 1861, 3,183; Letterkenny, 2,160; and Ramelton, Donegal, and Killybegs, which are seaports, and carry on a considerable trade.
The county returns 2 members to Parliament: constituency in 1859, 4,307.
The Assizes are held at Lifford.
The county is within the military district of Dublin, and there are artillery stations at the forts of Rathmullen, Knockalla, Macomish, Dunree, Inch and Ned's Point, on Lough Swilly, and at Greencastle on Lough Foyle, and barracks for infantry at Ballyshannon and Lifford.
