de BRIT—XII—Britt, Brett; Norman 'le Brit,' 'le Bret,' i.e., the Breton, native Brittany, the same as de Briotún, which see. Families of this name came to Ireland at the time of the Anglo-Norman invasion, or soon after, and settled in different parts of the country. de Breit (which see) is a variant.
